The Importance Of Technology - 1088 Words

The advancement of technology can bring about many helpful changes that propel humanity into the future and can help better millions of lives throughout the world. However, technology can also be used in evil ways such as fighting wars, which results in a massive loss of life. Three of these technologies or ways of modern thinking are the factory machines in the gilded age, airplanes and naval advancements in World War 1 and beyond, and the crazy modern thinking that lead to these machines. One reason that modernity encountered so many pitfalls throughout its existence is that people who have better technology think that they are better than everyone else. Countries that have advanced war machines can easily conquer countries that are†¦show more content†¦On a less brutal end, women in sweatshops would have fingers pierced by needles from sewing machines meant to increase production. On the bloodier side of the spectrum, factories and the dangerous machines inside them were responsible for upwards of tens of thousands of deaths each and every year. Many of these were caused by limited safety features on machines and improper training, which lead to small injuries all the way up to limbs being chopped off or even worse, death. This was due to the unfortunate result that there were very few laws if any being set into place to protect these workers, which meant that anyone injured on the job was likely out of work and struggling to get by, and families who lost a loved one to a factory accident were out of luck for any form of compensation. However, these horrible working conditions lead to worker strikes for safer working conditions, better pay, and better hours. This over time compiled and eventually started improving working conditions and compensation for injuries. Another advancement of technology that ended up being very dangerous was the airplane and more advancements of naval boats. Originally thought up as a way to travel in the sky and fly like a bird, the airplane was soon used to deal massive amounts of destruction and loss of lives to the enemy country.
